On a wet and wintry Saturday night in Bath we received a warm and friendly welcome at OneFish Two Fish even though we had not booked. The intimacy of the place certainly ofered shelter from the storm and the staff were eager to impress. Unfortunately that proved to be the high point of a disappointing evening. The retaurant itself, though atmospheric in a French caves sort of way turned out to be equally chilly. Had it not been soaked by the rain I would happily have retrieved my jacket from the coat rack and worn it throughout the meal.
The menu however looked more promising and we were tempted by the interesting daily specials on offer. We settled for Sushi, which was very fresh with excellent Wasabi followed by boullibaise and pollock served on a bed of mashed potato. " It's back" announced the menu of the fish stew but quite frnkly we wished it had stayed away. The fish was not of great quality and the dish was bulked out by oversized chunks of garlic bread. It was passable but owed more to Whitby than Marseilles. On reflection we should have taken Elizabeth David's advice and avoided the dish altogether. Our comments on the quality of the experience appeared to take the maitre'd by surprise and she went away to find a notebook to record our opinions. This had the effect of making us feel more like witnesses at the scene of an accident than customers, much to the discomfort of other diners I'm sure. Somehow we resisted the dessert menu and
