The ViewBath Review

As The Egg is the youth theatre of the Theatre Royal its cafe could not be designed for anything other than with children in mind.

The Venue
Despite its child-friendly ambience, there's plenty here to keep the adults entertained. While their energetic offspring run around in a venue built exactly with that goal in mind the parents can relax.

The cafe is colourful and playful, and there is a huge padded yellow and white egg stuck on the low ceiling and the rest of the surface is made of bendy mirrors. A giant round red couch is the main sitting area but they also have plastic red and orange chairs to sit around the small black tables.

Obviously, there are plenty of children’s seats available. Some of the walls are made of stone but this is the only old touch in an otherwise fully modern environment. One of the focal points is the children’s playground in the back corner, and here you can see many hyperactive toddlers screaming with joy.

The People
If the kids are happy so are the parents usually, and at The Egg Cafe this is particularly true. The place isa relaxing environment for adults as it's safe for children and it also provides lots of those things needed to keep kids under control, like dedicated food and drinks.

It is no surprise, then, that it is hard to find a customer walking in without a baby buggy. Most parents are young and arty but you will find all kinds of people here. As for the children, all ages are represented from babies to toddlers to young children. The place is friendly and it is easy to get caught up in conversation with perfect strangers after they let their little ones play.

The Food and Drink
There is something for the parents and something else for the kids. The Egg Cafe is managed by Chandos Deli, the nice people behind the gourmet food shop and cafe in George Street. You won't find fancy cheese or ham here, but you can still taste their great organic and fair trade coffees (£1.95) accompanied by a fresh slice of flapjack, baklawa, brownie, or several other sweets (£2.25).

For the babies, they offer a good selection of refrigerated baby foods (£1.20), individual juices, chocolate lollipops (£1), soft drinks plus crisps (75p), candy bars, chocolate buttons, and others. To sustain the parents there are a few sandwiches to choose from.

The Last Word
To enjoy The Egg Cafe you must have kids. If you do, this is one of the best places to take them and relax.
