AVOID.Went here on a Saturday afternoon in late January 2012. Food took AN HOUR AND A HALF to arrive - turned out they forgot all about us. When it came it was COLD - stone cold soggy chips on a big cold plate. The hour and half we spent waiting for it was FREEZING - everyone in the pub had their coats on!! TURN THE HEATING UP. I felt chilled to the bone when we finally left. Having gone for a cosy pub atmosphere and nice warm lunch we got neither and I was warmer when we stepped outside.Manager did refund our meal when pestered but was a sullen little man who failed to even apologise for the fact that his kitchen staff completely forgot our order.Again, AVOID. And if you must visit, take several layers and a hot water bottle.
Well, well........... they've got their mojo back!
Just freshly re-fitted with a new bar area and (I think) kitchen, plus redecoration & new table arrangements - all to the good and we enjoyed our first visit in several months.
The food choice is good, as befits a Greene King establishment, and there is a good choice of both beers & ciders, with monthly guesting as well.
Good to have them back on our visitation list!
Oh dear - standards have slipped !
Sorry to update my previous review with much less favourable assessment - the beers are now pretty standard brands, Duvel & Krombacher are gone, in favour of Kirin Japanese and Hoegarten. Not awful but rather boringly standard..........
Food has taken a big dip as well - menu has less choices but can come out, too often, undercooked and unappertising. (chips are now reconstituted potato, used to be 'real' - side salads now have boring contents, with a drench of bog standard dressing, in place of an unusual version, with delicate dressing)
I think they have been victim to the dead hand of new owner, the brewer Greene King, so we're off to try other places, sorry to say, as we will miss the chirpy Irish bar gal (tho not the grumpy blonde one from the serving floor!)
Great pub! Anywhere selling draft Duvel starts with an advantage but, when coupled with Krombacher German white beer and a great range of other beers plus ciders galore it's getting close to perfection!
Couple this with good, comfortable surroundings and friendly service and you are nearly at that perfect spot!
But it gets still better!! The food choice is excellent and well prepared as well as fair value - why would anyone want to leave? We never do and may move in to live!
