I have just returned from a ghastly Sunday lunch experience . Firstly, every last bit of character has been knocked out of this pub which I used to enjoy visiting. Secondly, my husband was told when he enquired about going on the waiting list for lunch that the list was closed. Funny that, as I asked five minutes later, and was put on the waiting list, as was every one else who asked at that point, but then, I am white and he is black.
After about a fifty minute wait we were found a table, but we were not made to feel welcome, and I can honestly say, I've never felt more unwelcome. We ordered large Sunday lunches, which according to the menu included two yorkshire puddings, as well as extra beef, roast potatoes, mash, and vegetables. We were given two yorkshire puddings, TWO roast potatoes each, and possibly the most dreadful beef I have ever eaten-hardly edible, stringy and tough.
The young waiter who served us was most apologetic when I pointed this out, and he himself admitted that if we had received the large dinners they would have come on a large, oval plate. When he mentioned this to the manager, and fairly deducted payment I heard the manager say, "Well, at least we've got some payment out of them." The inference was that he expected us to run away before paying or something like that. I would like to know why we were not told that we could not have the large dinner as advertised, but it is clear that if I had not queried it, I would have paid the full amount.
I do understand that places are busy, and that it is always sensible to book, but in the present economic climate I am surprised that seven people can be treated so shabbily. Normally, I wouldn't think race has anything to do with it, but as there were three black people in my party, and we were basically told to go away in the first instance, I have to say, that I think this certainly goes some way to explain why we were treated so badly-I would hate anyone else to suffer the same experience.
We popped into the George on boxing day at about 2.30 and were greeted by a sign which said 'please wait to be seated', which we could understand as boxing day must be a busy day. A member of staff came over to enquire if we were eating or drinking, we were considering eating anyway but weren't sure how many of us would be actually eating (there were 4 of us). We told the guy that we thought we would be but not sure if we all would be, he stood quite confrontationally and asked the same question again, and again, 'will you be eating or drinking? because we are busy and need the tables for diners'. We all felt very uncomfortable with his confrontational manner and the fact that he made us feel like we were somehow inconveniencing him. After being put on the spot, we finally told him yes we would be eating, and he showed us to a table for 6.A few minutes later the manger came over to just CONFIRM that we were DEFINITELY eating, because 'as im sure you all understand its boxing day and we need the tables for diners, but if you want to just drink you can sit outside' in the cold! We confirmed (for about the 6th time) that yes we will be eating, and finally we were left to enjoy our boxing day.The fact that a pub was only accepting patrons who were dining, is a sorry state of affairs, i can understand this to a degree but surely the whole point of going to a pub is to drink (and eat if you feel like it) in a comfortable and relaxing environment, and not feel pressured into ordering food. Ironically a couple of tables around us continued to stay empty for the rest of the afternoon, so their rude and inappropriate behaviour was pointless. This hasn't been the first time that ive had bad service here which is a shame as its a nice pub on a nice route, which the owners have taken blatantly advantage of.
Brilliant venue on the canal with a courtyard to sit out. Really great pub grub at reasonable prices. Good offers in the week.Be aware - you can't book tables and there's often a long wait on a Sunday or evening. Worth planning to get there early or have a snack before you go!
The best thing about this pub is its location next to the canal making it a good stop off point for a walk or bike ride on a sunny day. Trouble is this can make it very popular and I've been in here several times and had to queue for more than 20 minutes to get served. Food is also very slow and nothing very special when it arrives.
Just been to The George for a meal and it is closed as they are having a refurb! Had a quick look through the window and it looks fabulous...can't wait to go and see when finished!!
