The ViewBath Review
This centrally located youth hostel also doubles as a sports bar. And St Christopher’s Inn offers cheap cocktails and filling food, just don't expect top quality or service. The VenueA double tiered booth underneath a vaulted ceiling is St Christopher's Inn's biggest attraction. This mighty wooden bench can accomodate two rows of drinkers on each side and it even has its own flat screen TV. Unfortunately, the rest of the pub is fairly boring. Bits of modern furniture have been thrown together with traditional pub tables and chairs.
Couches, tall stools, exposed brickwork and benches all work together to make a bit of a mess. It has a well-used look and some of the upholstery is torn or stained. At night, by the light of the moon, it looks shabby chic (with squinting eyes), in the day its looks shabby.
The PeopleUnsurprisingly, given the large number of gap-year students staying in the adjoining hostel, St Christoper's gets rammed to the rafters with twentysomethings. Students come here for the meal deals and to meet (get lucky) with the hostel's transient residents. It can get loud, and during big match days it's filled with mostly men. Groups fare better than couples, and if you and your friends want a cheap drink it's worth checking out.
The FoodSt Christopher's serves an uncomplicated menu that's popular with the masses. Bar snacks and light bites such as tapas, nachos and tortillas cost between £4 and £10. Classic sandwiches are £5 to £8, seasonal salads are £6.80 to £7.50 and homemade fresh beef burgers cost between £5.30 to £8. And the burgers are not your run of the mill beef in a bap affair. There's the Aussie Works, which is pineapple, egg and beetroot while the Hawaiian has chicken, bacon, cheese, pineapple and mayo.
For something more filling, you can opt for the Texan-style steak, the chilli con carne or the lemon and herb chicken, but the bacon, avocado or seared chorizo salads are quite tempting. The presentation isn' great, but the food is cheap and filling.
The DrinkAs it's a party bar it's no surprise that St Christopher's serves cocktails. Their list isn't going to win awards, but there are all the old familiars such as Sex on the Beach and Frangelico Caipirouska, as well as some house mixes made with house spirits. Prices are unbeatable, and a glass is £4 and a bucket £11. During happy hour it's reduced to £3 and £9. Shooters, as you'd expect, are also served and they're popular. Using house spirits they create Absolute Barry, Opal Nera, Baileys and Frangelico for £2 to £3.
Beers and wines are also available and they are more popular than cocktails during the afternoons. Prices are again very affordable, with small wine glasses all priced at £3, large ones at £3.75 and bottles at a bare £10.50. The most exotic beers are San Miguel and Corona.
The Last WordSt Christopher’s Inn is central and cheap, and their food and drink reflects this, so if you're a student you'll be a regular.
