Yes, the film's approach was very predictable, but it did its job by telling its story quite powerfully. The courage of Suu and so many others in the face of brutal repression brought tears to my eyes more than once - especially in the first half of the film. I don't think we needed to see 'chemistry' between Michael and Suu, nor did we need to know how they first fell in love - we just needed to appreciate the enormous sacrifices they both made for the sake of Burma and its people, and that came over very strongly. And we certainly didn't need a tear-jerking finale (if one had any tears left to jerk); the struggle continues...

So, no prizes for originality, but praise, surely, for bringing the political drama to the screen. And praise for the music, I guess, because it wasn't the script that was moving me.
